Dark Mode Next

Smart dark mode for any website

Features

What you get in practice — not just a checklist.

Smart CSS inversion

Applies invert plus hue-rotate on the page for a dark look, with optional media re-inversion so images and videos stay natural instead of looking like negatives.

Per-site toggle

Enable or disable dark mode for the current hostname from the popup, or press ⌘/Ctrl+Shift+D when you want a fast flip.

All sites, whitelist, or blacklist

Choose whether dark mode runs everywhere, only on approved hosts, or everywhere except blocked hosts — then fine-tune exceptions as you go.

Filter tuning

Adjust invert, contrast, brightness, sepia, and grayscale when a site needs a lighter touch than the defaults.

Works across the web

Designed for everyday browsing on sites without a native night theme. Some canvas-heavy or already-dark sites may still need manual tweaks.

Local-only preferences

All settings live in chrome.storage.local. No analytics and no browsing data leaves your machine for this feature.

Privacy

Settings are stored locally. Details are on the Privacy Policy page.

FAQ

Common questions about Dark Mode.

Why do some images look wrong?

Smart mode can re-invert media so photos and videos stay natural. If a site still looks off, lower invert strength or disable dark mode for that host.

Can I darken only a few websites?

Yes. Use whitelist mode and enable dark mode per hostname from the popup, or start with all sites and blacklist the ones that already ship a good dark theme.

Why will Chrome Web Store pages not invert?

Chrome blocks extensions from modifying chrome:// and Web Store pages. That is a browser restriction, not a bug in Dark Mode Next.

What is the toggle hotkey?

⌘/Ctrl+Shift+D toggles dark mode for the current site. Confirm shortcuts under Chrome’s extension keyboard settings if yours differs.

Does it send my browsing history anywhere?

No. Preferences stay local. The extension does not phone home with the sites you visit.

Blog

Guides and tips for getting more out of Dark Mode.

Per-site dark mode without fighting native themes

Whitelist the sites that need help and leave polished dark UIs alone.

Sites with carefully designed dark themes often look worse under a global invert. Switch Dark Mode Next to whitelist, then enable it only where daytime layouts strain your eyes.

For a stubborn site, open filters and ease contrast or brightness instead of maxing invert. Small adjustments usually beat a harsh full inversion.

Filter tips for comfortable night reading

Dial invert, contrast, and brightness until text stays sharp and media still looks right.

Start with defaults, then nudge brightness down on glare-heavy pages. If blues feel neon, a touch of sepia can calm the palette without going full gray.

Keep media re-inversion on for article sites so photos remain recognizable. Turn it off only when a page’s icons or SVGs misbehave.
